He was raised by his grandmother until he was thirteen, when he moved to Lincoln, Illinois, to live with his mother and her husband, before the family eventually settled in Cleveland, Ohio. It was in Lincoln, Illinois, that Hughes began writing poetry. Following graduation, he spent a year in Mexico and a year at Columbia University. During these years, he held odd jobs as an assistant cook, launderer, and a busboy, and travelled to Africa and Europe working as a seaman. In November 1924, he moved to Washington, D.C. Hughes's first book of poetry, The Weary Blues, was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1926. He finished his college education at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania three years later. In 1930 his first novel, Not Without Laughter, won the Harmon gold medal for literature. biographical information taken from http://www.poets.org/poet.php/prmPID/83 ![]() Graded Assignments & Online Grades My goal is to pass back all graded assignments on Mondays. Additionally, my goal is to update grades every Tuesday. When I collect an assignment, I put the assignment into the grade book. Many English assignments, of course, cannot be graded overnight (or even in a week), so a blank remains in that assignment slot until a grade has been entered. If there is a blank, it is not negatively affecting your grade. Your grade is not affected until I enter a grade, a "mi" (missing), an "ab" (absent), or a zero (0). If you have a question about any grade or any assignment, please make an appointment with me, so that we can discuss it. Please do not question me during class or between classes.Current Prefix Game Standing

This dark experience cast a shadow over the clever, sensitive boy that became a defining experience in his life, he would later write that he wondered "how I could have been so easily cast away at such an age." This childhood poverty and feelings of abandonment, although unknown to his readers until after his death, would be a heavy influence on Dickens' later views on social reform and the world he would create through his fiction. Dickens would go on to write 15 major novels and countless short stories and articles before his death on June 9, 1870. Growing up in a small village in Romania, his world revolved around family, religious study, community and God. Yet his family, community and his innocent faith were destroyed upon the deportation of his village in 1944. Arguably the most powerful and renowned passage in Holocaust literature, his first book, Night, records the inclusive experience of the Jews.

~information taken from http://www.library.csi.cuny.edu/dept/history/lavender/389WesternWomen/cassarino.html ![]() I am proud to announce that my dad is now with the Baltimore Ravens! This is a perfect fit for several reasons: 1) I graduated from Annapolis Sr. High School in Annapolis, MD (about 30 mins from Baltimore), so this is another connection to MD for me. 2) My dad has previously worked with Coach Harbaugh (Head Coach) and Coach Mattison (Defensive Coordinator), and get along with them splendly well. 3) My grandfather (dad's dad) was a fan of the original Cleveland Browns who went on to become the Baltimore Ravens, so my dad is coaching for my grandpa's favorite team. 4) The most fun fact: The Baltimore Ravens are named after Edgar Allan Poe's famous poem by the same name. Poe, who was actually born in Boston, MA, considered Baltimore, MD his hometown. So Poe and Pees both left Boston and went to Baltimore, and how perfect is it that as an English teacher and a coach's daughter, I get to cheer for a team named after a famous poet (that I also happen to love).

You need to find an age-appropriate novel that you will enjoy reading. There are no page requirements per book; however, ultimately 1200 pages (600 pages for college prep) will need to be recorded by the end of the semester. In order to get pages recorded (thereby getting credit for pages), you must complete a book then blog it. Instructions for what must be included in the blog are listed on the SSR blog site.

![]() Books We Will Be Reading This YearIt is a good idea to purchase a copy of the books we read so that you can mark the text (a skill that we will be working on early in the year and mastering throughout). Learning to mark a text will be helpful to you in Advanced Placement classes as well as in college. As this is an honors class, many of the skills we learn will help you the following year in AP English (a.k.a. Language and Composition).
![]() Important Information on WikipediaWikipedia is a great starting place. It can help you narrow down your search, but as of now, the site is not a reputable source. The creator of the site, himself, said in a New York Times article that teachers should not allow students to use his site as a reliable source for research.
![]() Parody & SatireParody: Imitation of a particular style or genre for the purposes of satirizing it.
Satire: using laughter as a weapon to point out flaws in society ![]() Remember Your VerbsGreat description in writing comes from your verb choice.
When you get to a certain level of writing, verbs can actually be more powerful than adjectives and adverbs in improving your writing. See the following example: "She quickly walked to the door and opened it forcefully." vs. "She scurried to the door and jerked it open." The second sentence does a better job of creating tone and is therefore more impactful to read. It is also more concise, which creates better flow. ![]() The Power is in the Question~Socrates For further information, please see "The Socratic Method:The Power of Asking Questions" by Clarice Dankers under the Section Files heading on this page. ![]() Threaded DiscussionIf you would like to get a discussion started (about something academic and English related), I would be happy to start it for you. It isn't something that I need to participate in (other than to police it).
